How to Fix Deteriorated Concrete

Proper concrete repairs can last a long time.

Concrete is a strong building material often used in home construction for a foundation or for walls because of its durability. Although very strong, concrete may begin to deteriorate over time due to fluctuating temperatures or water leaking into the home. After the source of the deterioration is located, the wall will need to be properly repaired. A good concrete patch can last for several years. Proper preparation and the right tools are essential to a long-lasting repair.

Things You'll Need

• Brush
• Chisel
• Hammer
• Drill
• 1/2-inch masonry bit
• 1/2-inch rebar
• 4-lb. hammer
• Hydraulic cement
• Latex gloves

Instructions

1. Clean out any debris from inside the deteriorating concrete.

2. Scrub the hole with a stiff brush to remove any dust.

3. Insert the end of a chisel into the hole and hit it with a hammer to make an undercut. This makes the base slightly wider than the lip of the hole.

4. Drill three 1/2-inch holes 3 to 4 inches deep and evenly spaced in the concrete, using a drill. Pound a piece of 1/2-inch rebar into each hole with a 4-lb. hammer so the rebar is slightly recessed into the crack.

5. Mix a small batch of hydraulic cement according to the instructions on the packaging. Work quickly; hydraulic cement dries fast.

6. Place some of the larger rock debris in the hole. Pack hydraulic cement in the hole by hand. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands from sticking.

7. Press hard on the hydraulic cement to push out any air bubbles. Allow it to dry.
