How to Fold a Floral Origami Heart

How to Fold a Floral Origami Heart thumbnail
The floral heart mimics the petals of an open flower.

The floral heart is a more complicated origami pattern. It requires a thin sheet of paper and several squash folds. This pattern starts with a sheet of standard printing paper and finishes with a heart approximately 2-by-2-inches square. Use patience when folding and don't be afraid to experiment with different folds until you reach the shape described in each step.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the paper in half lengthwise so that it forms two long, thin rectangles. Set one rectangle aside.

    • 2

Fold in the top outer corners at a 45-degree angle. Fold in the lower outer corners at a 45-degree angle. Crease and unfold. You should end up with diagonally intersecting creases on each short end of the rectangle.

    • 3

Fold the short ends of the paper over while pressing the top and bottom sides of the paper inwards along the diagonally intersecting creases. This should form two triangle-shaped flaps at each end of the paper.

    • 4

Fold the top and bottom corner of both flaps over at a 45-degree angle so that the side corners of each triangle touch its top point. This creates a small square shape on top of the triangles.

    • 5

Lift up each of these last folds and press open and flat to create a small square shape.

    • 6

Fold the point of each triangle down to touch the side edges of the small square shapes. Crease and unfold. Fold backwards along this crease. Crease and unfold.

    • 7

Lift open each triangle enough to invert the point along the creases made so that each point of the triangles is folded down inside the paper to create a flat edge. This requires careful manipulation of the paper.

    • 8

Fold two sides of each of the four small square shapes in on the diagonal so that each square looks like an elongated diamond.

    • 9

Lift up each flap of these elongated diamonds and squash open and flat to create a smaller elongated diamond shape.

    • 10

Fold the entire piece of paper in half, width-wise. Fold open one edge just enough to reveal the two flat-topped triangles with their elongated diamond-shaped centers. You should see the heart shape.

    • 11

Fold back the bottom corners at a 45-degree angle. Flip the paper over. Fold the paper in half from one pointed side to another while leaving the floral center upright to complete the floral heart. Flip the paper over again to view the heart.
