How to Make a Square Sandwich Wrap

How to Make a Square Sandwich Wrap thumbnail
A pretty fabric wrap is a reusable option for packing your sandwiches.

Reusable fabric sandwich wraps provide an environmentally friendly option for your sack lunch. These attractive wraps protect your sandwich and keep it from drying out, but instead of tossing it afterward you wash it and use it again. Oilcloth, available from most fabric stores, is breathable but waterproof. It protects your sandwich from moisture and also prevents any moist sandwich ingredients from leaking out of the wrap. The wrap also acts as a handy placemat during lunchtime.

Things You'll Need

  • Oilcloth
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • 1/2-inch-wide hook and loop tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an 11-by-11-inch square from oilcloth. Lay the cloth flat on your work surface with the wrong side facing up.

    • 2

Fold in each corner 1/2 inch. Pin in place.

    • 3

Fold one side up 1/2 inch, pinning in place, to create the hem. Fold 1/4 inch under, creating a double folded hem so the raw edge of the fabric is hidden. Pin the fold in place. Repeat the double fold on the three remaining sides of the wrap.

    • 4

Sew along the inner fold of the hem on each side of the sandwich wrap. Trim the excess thread after sewing.

    • 5

Pin a 1-inch length of loop side of the hook and loop tape to the wrong side of the fabric, placing it ½ inch in from the one corner. Sew in place.

    • 6

Pin the hook side of the tape to the opposite corner of the fabric square, placing it on the right side of the fabric ½ inch in from the corner. Sew in place.

    • 7

Lay a sandwich in the center of the wrap on the wrong side of the fabric. Place the sandwich so the straight sides of the bread are perpendicular to each corner of the wrap. Fold the two opposing corners that don't have the hook and loop tape over the sandwich. Fold the remaining corners over the top, securing the wrap closed with the hook and loop tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of oilcloth, use nylon or another moisture-proof fabric.

  • Wash your sandwich wrap with your regular laundry. If you aren't using oilcloth, follow the fabric care instructions on your particular fabric choice.
