How to Make a Lined Elastic Waist Skirt

Line a lightweight fabric skirt to keep it modest.

An elastic waistband skirt offers a functional fashion essential that hugs your curves when you are at your best and gives a little bit of room to breathe on your curvier days. Create a comfortable and attractive skirt from a transparent or semisheer fabric and add a bit of modesty to the fashion essential with a simple satin lining. You can make the skirt for yourself or make the skirt for a child. The elastic waist skirt will expand with her as she grows.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Sheer fabric
• Scissors
• Satin fabric
• Sewing needle
• Thread
• 1-inch-wide elastic
• Safety pin
• Iron

Instructions

1. Measure your waist circumference and multiply the circumference by two. Measure from your waist to the length you would like the skirt and add 1 1/2 inches. Cut a rectangle of your sheer fabric according to these measurements.

2. Cut an identical rectangle from your satin fabric.

3. Lay the satin rectangle on top of the sheer fabric and fold the rectangles in half to reduce the width of the skirt to your waist circumference. Sew the side seam of the skirt with a straight stitch.

4. Fold over 1/2 inch of fabric to make the hemline. Choose either rough edge for the fold, and this will become the bottom of the skirt. Sew the hemline with a straight stitch and iron to crease the folded line.

5. Fold 1 inch at the top of the fabric and sew to make a tube for the elastic waistband.

6. Cut a small slit in the tube and slide the safety pin into the tube and all the way around. Pin the ends of the waistband together and sew them to the fabric. Remove the pin.
