DIY Rectangular Tablecloth With Skirt
A tablecloth and table skirt have a variety of uses, specifically for buffets, weddings and other special occasions, where the exposed legs of the table would detract from the formality of the event. Tablecloths and skirts can be expensive, but with some basic sewing skills you can create your own custom tablecloths and skirts from just about any fabric imaginable and at a cost that can be less than buying or even renting them.

1
Measure the length and width of the table. You want the tablecloth to hang down about 8 inches on each side of the table. Cut a piece of fabric to match this measurement. Thread will hold the skirt in place along the sides of the table.
-
2
Serge the edges of the tablecloth using a tight stitch. A serger, or overlocking sewing machine, trims the seam and encloses the seam allowance (the edge of the fabric) inside a thread casing, all in one step. If you do not have a serger you can fold the hem over ¼ inch and iron down. Fold the hem over another ¼ inch and pin in place. Sew the hem down using a ¼-inch seam allowance.

3
Measure the length of the table around the edges where you want to place the skirt. Measure the distance from the tabletop to the floor. Cut a piece of material to twice the circumference of the table and 1 inch longer than the length measurement.
-
4
Sew a hem along all raw edges of the fabric as you did for the tablecloth itself. Sew the two short sides of the skirt together.
-
5
Using elastic thread, sew a line of stitches down the length of the fabric ¼ inch from the top edge. Sew a second line ½ inch down from the first.
-
6
Place the tablecloth over the table. Place the skirt over the tablecloth. The elastic thread will hold the skirt in place along the sides of the table.
