How to Keep the GIMP Toolbox on Top

By default, the "Toolbox" window in the free image editing software GIMP remains on top even if you maximize the image you are editing. This allows you to freely change the size of the image editing window without fear that you will no longer be able to see and access GIMP's tools. However, it is possible to edit this setting, and if you have done so accidentally or the setting has been changed by another user, you may find it difficult to navigate the program's menus as you one did. Force the GIMP Toolbox to remain on top by making a change in the program's Preferences menu.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Edit" menu at the top of the main GIMP image editing window, and select "Preferences."

    • 2

Click the "Window Management" heading on the left side of the Preferences window.

    • 3

Click the drop-down menu next to "Hint for the toolbox," and select "Utility Window."

    • 4

      Click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • Select "Normal Window" on the drop-down menu next to "Hint for the toolbox" to prevent the Toolbox from always remaining on top in GIMP.
