When it comes to cake and cupcake decorations, I love nothing more than quick and easy tricks that look fancy and impressive. That, my friends, is where rose cupcakes come in. You can also use this trick on larger cakes, turning the entire outer layer into beautiful buttercream roses. It looks complicated, but it couldn't be easier! All you need is a piping bag and a 2D tip. It takes only a few seconds to frost one cupcake, so the whole batch comes together in no time. Your friends and family will be so impressed. Don't tell them how easy it was; it can be our secret!

Things You'll Need

  • Cupcakes (store-bought or homemade)

  • Buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)

  • 2D piping tip

  • Piping bag

  • Optional: red or pink food coloring

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients and Tools

This trick will work with either store-bought or homemade ingredients. I added a few drops of red gel food coloring to white buttercream frosting to create more of a "pink rose petal" effect, but that's entirely optional. White roses are also beautiful! Chocolate cupcakes would also work well here, either with white or pink frosting. Feel free to get creative. You will want a piping bag and a 2D piping tip, both of which can be purchased at craft/baking supply shops or online. You can purchase either disposable or reusable piping bags. I prefer the disposable versions for ease of cleanup.

Tip

Never fill the piping bag more than halfway with frosting or you'll have a potential mess on your hands. It's very easy to add more frosting as needed! Fill the bag halfway and then twist it firmly closed at the top so that nothing can escape while you pipe the roses.

Step 2: Start with a Dollop in the Center

Place the 2D tip in the piping bag, and fill the bag halfway full with frosting, twisting off the top to seal it closed.

Step 3: Begin Circling Outward

In the same motion, without lifting the bag, begin circling around the dollop of frosting, until the top of the cupcake is covered. This will probably only take two or three circles at most.

Step 4: Taper Off

Gently taper off the edge of the cupcake to finish creating the rose. Voila! Finish with the remaining cupcakes and frosting.
