How to Use an Inventory Backup on "Second Life"

"Second Life" is an online virtual world in which users can create their own avatar, explore virtual environments and interact with other users in a real-time environment. Every user has an inventory containing clothes, props, skins, body shapes and other virtual objects that they have purchased and/or created themselves. Like any other piece of data, a Second Life inventory list can become corrupted or lost. Various pieces of software exist to prepare back-ups of your inventory. The specifics vary by the exact model of software, although some general guidelines still apply. Two of the more popular options are Second Inventory and Inventory BackUp.

Instructions

  1. Inventory BackUp

    • 1

Open your "Second Life: account and log on using your avatar's name and password. Open your Inventory folder using the button in the lower right side of the window.

    • 2

Find the BackUp tool in your Inventory folder, then rez it in the world by clicking on it with your mouse and dragging it into the "Second Life" environment. It should appear as a box in the "Second Life" universe.

    • 3

Right click on the BackUp box and select "Tools" from the options wheel, then select "Delink." This sets up your back-up.

    • 4

Right click on the BackUp box and select "Edit," then click the "Contents" option. You'll see a duplicated list of all the folders and items in your Inventory list.

    • 5

Left click on the items in your Inventory list that you want to back up and drag them to their matching folders in the BackUp Contents list. This should duplicate the item and allow it to be safely stored.

    • 6

Repeat Step 4, then select an item from the "Contents" list that you want to retrieve. Left click and drag it back to your main Inventory list to retrieve it.

    Second Inventory

    • 7

Log onto "Second Life" by opening the browser, then typing in your avatar's name and password.

    • 8

Select the "Grid" option in the toolbar on the top of the frame, then select "Second Life" and click "Connect."

    • 9

Open your Inventory folder by clicking the button on the lower right side of the screen.

    • 10

Right click on the item or folder in your Inventory that you are trying to back up. If you're backing up an individual item, you'll see a choice on the option wheel entitled "Backup Item." If you're backing up an entire folder, the options will include one called "Folder Backup." Click on the pertinent option.

    • 11

Select the "Grid" option, as in Step 2, and click on the RL Inventory Tab. You should see a copy of your item there. Right-click any item in the RL Inventory Tab, and select "Open" to restore that item to your regular Inventory list.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reputable software may check with the creator of the object you with to back up to see if it is acceptable. If the object is "no copy," you may not be able to back it up, since the process essentially amounts to copying the object, which is against the creator's intentions.
