How to Make a Wipeable Tablecloth
When it comes to keeping the kitchen clean, families with young children need every advantage they can get. Wipeable tablecloths are one way to make life just a little easier for busy parents, and they are quick and easy to make at home. Buy some oilcloth or laminated cotton in a pattern that suits your style, pull out your sewing machine, and you can whip off a customized easy-clean tablecloth in less than an hour.

1
Measure your table. Add 10 to 15 inches to the length and width. Cut the oilcloth or laminated cotton to those dimensions.
-
2
Slide a strip of double fold bias tape onto the edge of the tablecloth. The bias tape should sandwich the material, with one layer above it and the other below. Pin it in place all the way around the tablecloth.

Sew the bias tape on as a hem. Many sewing machines do not work well on oilcloth or laminated fabrics, and using bias tape as a hem avoids this problem.

Tips & Warnings
Choose a bias tape that complements the colors of your tablecloth.
For a more playful look, hem the tablecloth with ric-rac instead. This covers only the laminated side of the fabric instead of both sides, but it still avoids the need to sew directly through the wipeable material.
