How to Budget for Bathroom Improvements

Remodeling your bathroom can be very rewarding, but it can also be a time-consuming and expensive project. Taking the time to work up a comprehensive bathroom remodeling budget is one of the best ways to keep your costs under control without sacrificing the bathroom you have always wanted. No matter what your goals, there are things you can do to keep your costs low and still get the beautiful bathroom you want.

1. Identify the elements and fixtures that you want to replace in your bathroom makeover. Shop for the sink, toilet, shower stall and other fixtures that you wish to replace. Determine whether or not you are capable of doing the installations or if you will require a contractor to do the job. Contact several contractors and request a quote for the work.

2. Price the various lighting options available for your bathroom, from track lighting to skylights and standard fluorescents. Compare the cost of each option and choose the one that best suits your taste and budget. Add the cost of the lighting, including any installation, to your overall bathroom remodeling budget.

3. Estimate the amount of paint needed to put new colors on the bathroom walls. Choose a quality paint designed for use in bathrooms, then add the cost to your overall budget. Include the cost of the rollers, brushes and sponges you need to complete the work, unless you already own those items. You may also want to add a stencil design along the top of the walls -- if so be sure to include that extra cost as well.

4. Measure the dimensions of your bathroom, then check the cost per square foot for each flooring option you are considering. Choose the flooring option that best meets your needs and budget, then add that cost to your total. Include the cost of installation if you plan to hire a contractor to do the work instead of installing the flooring yourself.

5. Add the cost of each part of your bathroom renovation plan to get the estimated cost of the improvements. Use this figure to budget your money and save up for the bathroom remodeling project.
