How to Make a Veil for Over a Bed

How to Make a Veil for Over a Bed thumbnail
A bed veil can liven a drab space.

Sometimes it may be difficult to fit home decor into a tight budget. Other times it's simply too time consuming to put decorating plans in motion. But a few simple, inexpensive changes to your bedroom can make the space feel new and inviting again. Adding a veil over a bed is a quick way to add fresh appeal to any bedroom.

Most bed veils are attached to a large loop that allows the fabric to drape around the entire bed. This is mainly used for mosquito netting. There is a much simpler way to create a veil that will add charm to your bed, without the need to attach a loop. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Spread the fabric out.

    • 2

Pick the fabric up at the center point using the tips of your fingers.

    • 3

Gather the rest of the fabric in the other hand and create a giant knot by threading the center point through the rest of the fabric. The knot should now hang from the center point of the fabric.

    • 4

Manipulate the knot until it is the size and tightness that is attractive to you. The rest of the fabric should hang fairly evenly from all around the knot.

    • 5

Cut a small neat slit in the center point, at least 1 inch from the top, just large enough for the ribbon to pass through. Do not cut the top out.

    • 6

Thread the ribbon through the slit.

    • 7

Affix the hook to the ceiling above the bed at the desired point.

    • 8

Hang the veil by adjusting the ribbon to create the desired length and location of the veil over the bed. The ribbon can be tied in a bow or left with strings hanging.

    • 9

Allow the fabric to flow evenly over both sides of the bed.

Tips & Warnings

  • To estimate the length of fabric needed place a pencil mark above the bed in the desired location for the start of the veil. Measure from this point down both sides of the bed to the desired length of the veil. Add the two lengths together. Add another yard to those measurements to allow for the knot. Take these measurements with you to the fabric store.

  • Trim excess fabric that is longer than needed or allow it to flow loosely on the floor around the bed.

  • Use a stud when attaching the hook to the ceiling.
