1
Scrutinize various types of handbags for ideas. Visit stores that carry a wide selection of handbags and make a list of the features you want to include. Review magazines and check online outlets to get ideas about the handbag you want to make.
-
2
Calculate what you want to carry in your handbag and go for an appropriate size. If all you need is room for your cell, keys and a credit card, design a handbag that is the size of your hand; if you plan to use the handbag as a depository when grocery shopping, constructing one that is closer to the size of a gym bag is more practical.

3
Sketch some designs that incorporate all the features you want in your ideal handbag. Include things such as side pockets for sunglasses, a clip for keys and an inside zippered compartment for your wallet.
-
4
Select your material. If it is a casual handbag for the beach, you may choose light cotton fabric. For an elegant yet practical model, you can opt for good quality leather for a handbag that will serve you for years to come.
-
5
Make a mock-up. Rather than starting to hole punch expensive leather, make a replica out of old canvas fabric you have laying around to see if it meets your expectations. Try it out for a day or so and make alterations as required.
-
6
Be creative. Think outside the conventional handbag circle. Consider cutting a hole in a basketball and attaching a handle. You would be sure to be the only girl in school with a bounceable tote. Other ideas include things such as cutting off a pair of jeans, sewing the top of the legs and attaching a long denim strap.
