Many women wear casual headscarves like this, but others wear them for religious reasons.

In the Orthodox tradition, women wear headscarves to cover their ears and hair. The Orthodox Jewish woman is required to wear a headscarf once she is married to represent that she is no longer available to men other than her husband. Other Orthodox women wear headscarves as fashion or as a symbol of modesty. Whatever your reason for donning an Orthodox style headscarf, known as a tichel, you must learn how to properly wear and tie the scarf so as not to offend anyone.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your headscarf completely so that there are no folds in the fabric. Place the scarf over your head so that the length of the scarf is around your ears and the scarf covers your eyes.

    • 2

Roll the front of the scarf upward with one fold so that it no longer covers your eyes. Orthodox tradition states that your headscarf must cover your hair and ears completely.

    • 3

Bring the ends of the scarf around the back of your head to tie them. Take an end of the scarf in each hand and cross one over the other to make an "X." Bring the ends up and tie in a knot.

    • 4

Pull the ends of the headscarf tightly together so that it is secure on your head.
