Instructions

  1. Prepare the Card

    • 1

Select four different colors of cardstock. You can use whichever colors you like, but you may prefer to choose colors that go well together. You can even pick colors that match the occasion your card represents. Two of these will be your base colors and two will be your accent colors.

    • 2

Cut two large squares, one from each of your base colors, measuring 2 1/2 inches square. These are your base squares.

    • 3

Cut eight smaller squares, four from each of your accent colors, measuring 1 1/4 inches square. These are your accent squares.

    • 4

Decorate your accent squares. Use a rubber stamp to print patterns, or glue and glitter for added sparkle.

    Make the Pinwheel

    • 5

Glue your base squares together. Lay them on top of one another on your work surface and turn one of them through 45 degrees to make an eight-pointed star.

    • 6

Glue one of your accent squares to the base star. Put the corner of the accent square into the point of the base star, leaving a thin border showing. Take care just to coat one corner of the accent square in glue, as you will need to get under it later.

    • 7

Glue a different colored accent square over the first one, so that its corner goes into the next point of the base star.

    • 8

Continue to glue your accent squares in this fashion, alternating colors every time until you get to the last of the eight squares.

    • 9

Lift up your first accent square and glue the final accent square underneath it to complete the pattern.

    • 10

Prick a hole through the center using a knitting needle and pincushion. Your pinwheel is now complete.

    • 11

Mount the pinwheel to your gift card using a large brad.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use graph paper for accuracy when building your base.

  • Use different patterns on your accent squares or leave one accent color blank. Get creative and come up with a range of designs.
