How to Crochet a Triangle Shawl
A triangle shawl can complete any outfit. Wear it on a cold night out over your evening dress or throw it on over a T-shirt and jeans. Crocheting a shawl, instead of spending the money to purchase one, allows you to customize the pattern, color and fiber used to make it. Once you've learned the pattern to crochet a triangle shawl, it will be simple to make more than one. Create a few in different colors for yourself or to give as gifts.

1
Gauge your crochet work to ensure that your crocheting isn't too loose or tight, resulting in an ill-fitting shawl. Crochet a square that consists of six rows, each with seven stitches. This square should measure about four inches. If your work measures less or more than four inches, adjust your tension to make your stitches smaller or larger.
-
2
Chain 201 to begin the shawl. With the wrong side facing, begin with the fifth chain from the hook. Create a double crochet. This counts as one double crochet and a chain-one space.
-
-
3
Chain one. Skip over the next chain. Create a double crochet in the next chain. Repeat this process to finish out the first row. This should result in 99 spaces. Turn your shawl to work in the other direction.
-
4
Create four chains. Skip over the first chain-one space. Create one double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row. Begin the first pattern in this row by chaining one. Skip over the chain-one space. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this pattern twice.
-
5
Yarn over with your hook, creating a second loop. Yarn over again, this time pulling the yarn through both loops. Repeat the yarn over pattern three times in the next chain-one space. Yarn over a last time and pull the yarn through the four loops you've created on the hook. This creates a cluster in the middle of the row. Create a double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row.
-
6
Begin the third pattern in the second row by chaining one. Skip the next chain-one space and create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this three times.
-
7
Continue working the second row by repeating Steps 5 and 6 until you finish the row. Turn your work to start the third row.
-
8
Crochet a slip stitch in the first double crochet. Make a second slip stitch in the chain-one space and a third in the next double crochet. Chain four. Skip over the chain-one space and create a double crochet in the next double crochet from the previous row. This will result in decreased stitches from the previous rows.
-
9
Begin the pattern for the third row by chaining one. Skip over the next chain-one space. This chain-one space is the cluster you created in the second row. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this process until you have reached the last chain-one space in the third row. The rest of the shawl will not be worked in this row. Turn your shawl to begin the fourth row and work in the opposite direction.
-
10
Decrease the stitches in the fourth row. Chain one. Skip over the next chain-one space. Create a double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row. Repeat this process twice.
-
11
Create another cluster in the chain-one space by yarning over several times, as done in Step 5. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet.
-
12
Chain one. Skip over the next chain-one space. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this process three times.
-
13
Continue working along the fourth row by repeating Steps 11 and 12 until you have five chain-one spaces remaining. Create another cluster in the next chain-one space. Make a double crochet in the next double crochet.
-
14
Chain one. Skip over the next chain-one space. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this three times. Do not work the remainder of the fourth row. Turn your shawl to work in the opposite direction.
-
15
Work along your triangle shawl, repeating the third and fourth row until the stitches have decreased and only five chain-one spaces remain in a row. Repeat Steps 8 through 14 to decrease the stitches, following the decreasing pattern for these two rows. Remember to turn your shawl after each row to work in the opposite direction.
-
16
Begin the next row by decreasing the amount of stitches. Chain one. Skip the next chain-one space. Create a double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat this twice. Do not work the rest of the row. Turn your triangle shawl to work in the opposite direction.
-
17
Chain one. Skip over the next chain-one space. Double crochet in the double crochet. Tie off the yarn and cut, leaving a 2-inch tail. Weave the tail into the stitches.
-
18
Turn the shawl so it is right-side facing. Create a slip stitch in the top, left corner to attach the yarn. Single crochet down the side edge, keeping your crochets even. Work around each edge of the triangle shawl until you reach the top, left corner. Slip stitch to join.
-
19
Chain one. Instead of working right to left, crochet left to right, creating reverse single crochets. Create a reverse single crochet in each single crochet around the edge of the shawl. Slip stitch to join at beginning. Tie off and cut the yarn. Weave the tail into the stitches.
