Make an embossed ID tag with a metal tag blank and metal letter stamps. ID tags can be used for dog or cat collars, and can also be used for your personal information, such as medical information or an emergency telephone number. Instructions

    • 1

Place the metal ID tag blank onto a bench block. Tape it in place with masking tape. Align the top of the tape just below the center line of the metal blank to use as a stamping guide. This way the letters will be centered and even on the tag.

    • 2

Hold the first letter metal stamp in position and right side up. Use the thumb notches on the handle as a guide, and hold the stamp on the notch to ensure the letter is stamped in the correct orientation. Line the letter up with the masking tape.

    • 3

Hold the metal stamp straight up. Hit the top of the stamp with a hammer in one hard hit to drive the stamp into the metal blank and leave a deep impression of the letter.

    • 4

Continue to add letters to the metal blank by aligning the letter stamps with the masking tape and driving them into the metal with a hammer until you have finished your ID tag.
