How to Get the Market Working on Color Nook

Set up your Nook e-reader so you can shop for books in the Barnes & Noble market.

The Nook Color by Barnes & Noble has a shopping application preloaded on the e-reader that allows you to purchase and download books onto the device. To enable the market application on the Nook Color, you need to properly set up and register the device with Barnes & Noble. You need a credit card to set up your Barnes & Noble account so you can activate the market application.

Instructions

1. Navigate to barnesandnoble.com and sign into your Barnes & Noble account. If you do not have an account, click "Sign In," "Create Account" and then fill out the required information.

2. Click "My Account" at the top of the screen and then "Change Default Payment Method" under "Payment Settings." Follow the on screen instructions to add a credit card to your account. You cannot use the Barnes & Noble market without a credit card attached to your account, even if you only want to download free books.

3. Press the "Power" button in the upper-left corner of the Nook to turn on the device. A video plays on the screen after the Nook boots up. This is a welcome video that only plays when first setting up the Nook.

4. Read the "Terms of Service" and tap "Accept" if you agree. You cannot use the Nook if you do not agree to the terms.

5. Tap your time zone on the "Time Zone" screen. The Nook then checks for a Wi-Fi connection and displays a list of available connections on the screen. If you do not have Wi-Fi in your home, you can take the Nook to a Barnes & Noble store, which has free Wi-Fi.

6. Touch the name of the Wi-Fi connection you want to connect to, tap "Connect" and enter the password for the network, if needed.

7. Enter your Barnes & Noble sign in information and click "Sign In" to register your Nook with Barnes & Noble.

8. Touch the white arrow on the bottom of the screen to open the Quick Nav Bar and touch "Shop," which is a green shopping bag icon. The Barnes & Noble store opens on the screen.

9. Tap "Browse" on the bottom of the screen, touch the categories to narrow your search and scroll through the lists of books and magazines.

10. Touch the green "Buy" button next to the book or magazine you want to purchase, touch "Confirm" and then "Buy" again to purchase an item from the shop.
