How to Evolve Magikarp in "Emerald"
In "Pokemon: Emerald Version," Magikarp is one of the most useless and weakest Pokemon -- that is, until it evolves into Gyarados. Gyarados is one of the game's strongest water-flying Pokemon with very high attack, defensive and hit point statistics. Before you can reap the benefits of Gyarados, you must first evolve Magikarp. Battling anyone anywhere will result in experience points for Magikarp. Because Magikarp is generally defenseless, it is best to level it up in weaker areas found in the earlier sections of "Pokemon: Emerald Version."

Press the "Start" button and select "Pokemon."

Highlight "Magikarp," press "A" and select "Move." Move Magikarp to the top of your Pokemon order. Any Pokemon summoned during a battle receives experience points. Making Magikarp your first Pokemon ensures that he is in every battle and gives you the opportunity to quickly take him out of the battle.

Walk, bike or fly to Slateport City. Go to the east section of the city and enter Route 134 as indicated by the sign on the road. Battle every trainer and wild Pokemon in the area to level up Magikarp until it evolves at level 20.
