How to Install a Halyard on a Flag
A halyard, or rope, connects to a pulley system attached to a flagpole. Pulling the halyard raises and lowers a properly attached flag as you stand on the ground. A strong connection between the flag and the halyard is important to ensure the flag does not fly from the flagpole. Snaps are a common connector used to hold a flag in place. Correctly installing the snaps to the halyard ensures the flag remains attached to the flagpole even in the windiest conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Pull the halyard until the knot connecting the ends of the line sits 3 to 4 feet above the ground.
-
2
Pinch the halyard to create a small loop. Pull the end of the loop away from the halyard to increase its size to 1 1/2 inches in length.
-
-
3
Slide the end of the loop through the ringed end of a snap. Pull the entire length of the loop through the ring. Push the snap through the loop. Pull the end of the snap to tighten the loop and secure it to the halyard.
-
4
Pull the level -- located on near the front of the snap -- to open the clasp. Slide the open snap through the eyelet of a flag. Release the clasp to secure the flag to the halyard. Pull the halyard to raise the flag until the second eyelet of the flag sits at a comfortable height.
-
5
Hold the flag to the halyard. Pinch the line at the next flag eyelet. Repeat the procedure of securing the snap to the line. Connect the second snap to the flag.
-
6
Raise the secured flag to the desired height.
