How to Move iTunes with WinZip

WinZip is a third-party file-compression application that allows you to combine multiple files into one "zipped" folder. Your zipped folder is compressed, meaning that the size of the file is smaller than the total of all the uncompressed files it contains. This function can be helpful when you are moving large folders, such as the iTunes folder in which all your iTunes library files are stored. You can then use WinZip on the destination computer to extract the iTunes files from the zipped folder.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch WinZip on the computer containing the iTunes folder you want to move.

    • 2

Click the "Application Menu" at the top left corner of the window, and then click "New."

    • 3

Type a name for the zipped folder into the "File Name" field at the bottom of the window, and then click "Create."

    • 4

Click the "Add Files" icon at the top of the window, and then browse to your iTunes folder.

    • 5

Click the "iTunes" folder, and then click the "Zip" button.

    • 6

Click "OK" to verify the completion of the compression.

    • 7

Insert the transferable media that you are going to use to move the zipped folder.

    • 8

Right-click your zipped folder, click "Send To," and then click the transferable media that you just connected to your computer.

    • 9

Click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon at the lower right corner of your screen, and then click your transferable media.

    • 10

Connect your transferable media to the destination computer.

    • 11

      Launch WinZip.

    • 12

Click the "Unzip" icon at the top of the window.

    • 13

Browse to the zipped folder on your transferable media, and then double-click it.

    • 14

Browse to a location on your computer, and then click "Unzip" to extract the compressed files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows 7 also includes a file-compression utility that you can use instead of WinZip. You can compress any folder or file by right-clicking on the item, clicking "Send To," and then clicking "Compressed (Zipped) Folder."

  • Verify that iTunes is set up to store your library files in the iTunes Media folder before using WinZip. Launch iTunes, and then click "Edit" at the top of the window. Click "Preferences," and then click the "Advanced" tab. Check the box to the left of "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library," and then click "OK."
