How to Paint Dog Ornaments

Use your own dog as inspiration for your ornament.

Painting holiday ornaments is a fun and inexpensive way to celebrate the season. Dogs are a popular choice for ornaments as they can be created to resemble your own pet. Store-purchased or homemade ceramic ornaments can be shaped into various dog breeds. The dog shaped ornament can then be painted using acrylic paints. Round bulbs can also be painted with a dog or dog-related scene. Once the ornaments have been painted and dried, a coat of ceramic glaze will keep your custom-made ornament safe for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase ceramic dog ornaments, plain Christmas bulbs or make your own dog-inspired ornaments. To create homemade dough that will harden into a ceramic state, mix together ½-cup salt, 1-cup flour and ½-cup water. Sculpt the dough into the dog shape you want and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 2 hours in a 250 degree Fahrenheit oven.

Apply a layer of base-coat primer over the entire surface of the ornament. Allow a minimum of one hour for the primer paint to dry before handling. Primer is recommended when using acrylic paints to prevent the paint from being absorbed into the ceramic. Primer is typically not needed for glass bulbs.

Paint the dog ornament with the desired acrylic colors and a small-tipped paint brush. Get inspiration from photos of real dogs if needed. Add distinctive dog markings such as spots, breed-specific coloring, or lengthy fur by applying long strokes from the paint brush. Paint a collar, bow or scarf onto the dog if desired.

Cover the dried acrylic paint with a clear ceramic glaze. Glaze will give the ornament a smooth, shiny surface. A layer of glaze will also keep the colors vibrant and prevent the acrylic paint from chipping. Allow the glaze up to two hours to dry before hanging your dog ornament.
