How to Design Your Own A-Line Dress for a Baby
Designing an A-line dress for a baby is easy to do if you break it down into a few simple and straightforward steps. The hardest part of the process is over because you've already chosen the silhouette; now you just need to focus on the size, color and detail work.

You'll want to make sure to choose an appropriate size for the dress. Ideally, design the dress to be a bit bigger than what the baby is currently wearing so that she can grow into the dress and be able to wear it longer. Clothing for babies is sized in three-month intervals; typically a three-month-old baby will wear size six-months clothes. So, as an example, you would want to design the dress to be size six months or even size six to nine months.

Consider what the weather will be doing outside while the little one will be wearing this dress. If it is during the winter, then you'll want to go with a heavier fabric, maybe even flannel. If it is during the warmer months, you'll want to choose a more breathable fabric like cotton.

When you're deciding on a color for the dress, you'll also want to consider the seasons and weather. If it will be a dress for use during the holidays, then you'll most likely want something with rich hues of reds, greens or purples. However, if you're designing the dress to be worn on summer picnics, then you'll find pastel colors are more appropriate.

The final steps of your design process are the details on the dress. As you sketch possible designs, you need to consider questions such as the following. Do you want ruffles? Do you want buttons? Would you rather it snap or zip in the back? Many mothers find that the less you have around the baby's face and neck area, the happier the baby will be. Design your dress with the baby's comfort in mind, and keep the frills near the bottom edging of the dress.

Tips & Warnings
If this is the first dress you're designing, try to keep it simple and straightforward so you're not put off on designing more dresses. Less is more, especially when it comes to clothing for babies.
Be very careful in choosing the details to add to your dress as you don't want to pose any possible choking hazards for babies or toddlers.
