How to Make Large Aluminum Foil Packets

Aluminum foil packets are used to bake or grill various dishes. Chicken and fish are excellent in a foil packet. Large aluminum foil packets work well for cooking vegetables. By grilling and baking meat or vegetables in a packet made with foil, you trap the moisture in the packet, which creates steam. That steam keeps the food fresh and tender. Try grilling fresh vegetables with a couple pieces of ice to create steam within the packet. For baked foil packet recipes, brush olive oil over the meat or vegetables to add moisture. Instructions

    • 1

Start with a large sheet of aluminum foil. The foil can also be used to make small packets that cook individual portions. Small foil packets tend to be better suited to cooking meats whereas large foil packets are perfect for a side dish of vegetables. If you are cooking several items in foil packets, remember that large ones take up more room so you will need to time your cooking accordingly.

    • 2

Add the dish you are cooking to the center of the foil sheet. It is perfectly okay to have extra space in the foil packet, however, if the dish is for one person you may want to reconsider using a smaller packet.

    • 3

Fold over the sides of the foil (lengthwise) so they meet in the middle.

    • 4

Fold one end of the foil (width-wise) over by 1 inch. Fold the end over once more so that it makes a double seal.

    • 5

Repeat step 3 with the other end of the foil.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carefully open one end of a foil packet after it is done cooking to let the steam out before opening the rest of the packet.

  • If you do want a smaller foil packet, follow the same instructions with a smaller sheet of foil.
