How to Paint & Refinish Black Metal File Cabinets

Sand and re-paint a file cabinet.

If you have a black metal file cabinet that is looking a little scruffy, you do not need to throw it away. A black metal file cabinet is a classic office staple that will bring a shiny vintage feel to your office space with a little sanding and re-painting. Rent an electric sander from your local home construction supply store to get started.

Things You'll Need

• Drop cloth
• Hand truck
• Helper
• Damp cloth
• Dry cloth
• Painter's tape
• Screwdriver
• Sand paper (100-grit is sufficient)
• Goggles
• Metal primer spray paint
• Metal spray paint

Instructions

1. Spread a drop cloth across a firm outdoor space. Place the file cabinet on the drop cloth with the help of a friend. Keep in mind proper lifting techniques of lifting with your legs instead of your back and use a hand truck if possible.

2. Wipe down the file cabinet with a damp cloth and dry it off.

3. Put safety goggles over your eyes. Unscrew any drawer handles or metal parts from the file cabinet. Do not attempt to take the drawers out of the file cabinet.

4. Sand any chips or rough parts of the file cabinet with a folded piece of 100-grit sandpaper. Spend a little extra time sanding any rusted spots on the file cabinet.

5. Wipe down the file cabinet with a tack cloth, which is designed to pick up sawdust.

6. Shake a spray paint can of metal primer and spray it across the entire file cabinet. Spray light coats about 10 inches from the surface until the cabinet is completely covered. Allow the primer to dry.

7. Shake a spray paint can of metal paint across the file cabinet. You may need to apply two coats of paint. Allow the coats to dry in between application.
