Troubleshooting a Sea-Doo GSX

Troubleshooting a Sea-Doo GSX thumbnail
An overheated Sea-Doo engine will quickly turn the thrill into the mundane.

The Bombardier Sea-Doo GSX is a powerful recreational water craft ideal for a day at the beach. It uses a powerful engine that turns an impeller that draws in water and sends it to the venturi. The venturi accelerates the water and sends it back out to thrust the craft forward. Although this system seems quite straightforward, it can experience complex problems that bring the fun to a halt. However, with a little troubleshooting, common problems involving the lanyard, engine and battery are easily remedied.

Things You'll Need

  • Engine coolant
  • Multimeter
  • Socket wrench
  • Dry cloth
  • Bombardier lube

Instructions

    • 1

Remove and reinstall the safety lanyard if the engine makes one long beep when you're trying to start it. Replace the safety lanyard with another programmed for the Sea-Doo if the sound persists and the engine doesn't start.

    • 2

Check the engine coolant level if the Sea-Doo makes a constant sharp beeping sound, indicating the engine has overheated. Add more engine coolant if necessary, and if the beeping sound persists and the engine won't start, check the coolant lines for leaks. Check the coolant pump for defects and replace it if necessary.

    • 3

Check for loose battery connections if the engine doesn't start. Test the battery for a complete discharge using a multimeter and replace it if it's completely drained.

    • 4

If the engine still won't start, remove the spark plugs one by one using a socket wrench and dry the spark plugs and their ports with a clean drying cloth. Check each spark plug for cracks or unusual wear and replace faulty plugs. Spray a small amount of Bombardier lube into each spark plug port before threading them back in.

    • 5

Take the Sea-Doo to an authorized dealer immediately if it lacks power or normal acceleration, likely from clogged fuel injectors or lower fuel pressure, to avert serious problems.

Tips & Warnings

  • Poor-quality gasoline can cause the engine to ping and knock. Use only the best-quality gasoline when operating a Sea-Doo to avert problems and for the best performance.
