How to Resaw Lumber With a Bow Saw

While cutting with a bow saw is not as quick or as easy as with a circular saw, it can easily get the job done when you are resawing various size pieces of lumber. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the piece of lumber that is going to be resawed. Run a tape measure along the piece and make a small pencil mark at the desired cut location. Line up a T-square across the lumber at the pencil mark and draw a straight line across the lumber.

    • 2

Set the piece of lumber down on a flat surface with the cut mark hanging slightly over the edge of the surface. Tighten a C-clamp down by hand around the piece of lumber so it does not move when you are cutting it. Position the C-clamp near the edge of the surface, close to the cut location.

    • 3

Inspect the blade of the saw and verify it is sharp. Hold the bow saw with your dominant hand along the handle at the end. Press it down firmly on the pencil mark. Move the blade slowly back and forth at the cut mark.

    • 4

Push the blade into the lumber and continue moving it back and forth slowly until an indentation has been made in the lumber. Pick up the speed of the saw and move it faster into the lumber. Continue back and forth until the saw is through and the lumber is cut in two pieces.

    • 5

Measure the lumber and verify the proper size piece was cut. Repeat the process for all the other pieces of lumber that need to be resawed.
