How to Sew a Tufted Skirt

How to Sew a Tufted Skirt thumbnail
Some wedding dress trains are long and elaborate.

A tufted section of a skirt is where a bit of the skirt is pulled up and sewn, pinned or attached with a button to a higher part of the skirt, adding texture to the skirt's style. An example of a tufted wedding dress bustle is tufting to the train up into the bustle. A wedding dress skirt is a wide, puffy skirt with a long train that needs to be tufted to make sure the bride can move around during the reception. Some everyday skirts have tufts to give the skirt dimension or style.

Instructions

  1. Sew the Tufted Wedding Skirt

    • 1

Place the skirt on a mannequin or a model for easier access.

    • 2

Choose the sections of the skirt and train that need to be tufted.

    • 3

Mark the place on the skirt from where the fabric will hang with the fabric chalk.

    • 4

Sew the threaded loop onto the chalk marks with a needle and thread. Make sure that you make the loop small so it's not completely noticeable when the skirt isn't tufted and big enough for the button to go through.

    • 5

Sew the button onto the train and skirt in strategic places to make the train pull up into a stylish bustle.

    • 6

Pull the buttons up and insert them into the loops to tuft the skirt.

    Tufted Skirt for Everyday Use

    • 7

Place the skirt on a mannequin or model for easier access to the skirt.

    • 8

Mark the fabric of the skirt about 2 inches below the spot where you want to tuft to be with the fabric chalk.

    • 9

Mark the spot on the skirt where you will make the tuft with the fabric chalk.

    • 10

Pull the first chalk mark to the second chalk mark and stitch the tufted spot with a needle and thread to keep the tuft in that position permanently.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make the loop hidden just under the waist on a wedding dress so it's not seen when the bride is walking down the aisle.
