How to Make Breadcrumbs From English Muffins

How to Make Breadcrumbs From English Muffins thumbnail
Give old English muffins a second life as breadcrumbs.

There's nothing quite as disappointing as stale English muffins. What was once a soft, doughy, treat is now nothing more than a hardened, tasteless puck. But don't toss old English muffins in the trash once they're past their prime. Turn them into breadcrumbs and reuse them for coating chicken, fish, vegetables, or as a topping for casseroles and other baked dishes. The light, airy muffins are particularly well-suited for re-purposing as breadcrumbs. Two to three English muffins should make about one cup of crumbs. Make extra breadcrumbs and store them in the freezer in zip-top plastic bags for later use. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the English muffins on a baking sheet and place in a preheated 325 degree oven if they're not yet stale. Bake for a few minutes until they become slightly crispy and allow to cool completely.

    • 2

Tear the cooled English muffins into one-inch chunks, or do that to your stale English muffins.

    • 3

Fill a food processor, coffee grinder, or blender about halfway full with English muffin chunks. Repeatedly pulse the chunks until you reach your desired consistency.

    • 4

Season the breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, Parmesan cheese, and dried herbs and spices, if you wish.
