How to Make a Fringe or a Tassel for a Crochet Scarf

Adding a tassel or fringe is a way to finish off an otherwise plain scarf.

For knit and crochet beginners, finishing your first scarf is a proud moment. However, if you haven't yet learned how to incorporate more than one color or how to work the fancier, more visually interesting stitches, your scarf can look a little plain. Using tassels or a fringe to embellish the ends of an otherwise uninteresting scarf is both quick and easy to do. Try making them in contrasting colors for added impact or putting a fringe all the way around the edges for an interesting look.

Instructions

  1. Tassel

    • 1

Measure and cut the cardboard into a rectangle the same length that you want your tassels to be.

    • 2

Wrap the yarn around the cardboard. The more times you wrap the yarn, the bigger the tassel will be at the end.

    • 3

Cut a length of yarn approximately 8 inches long and thread it under the wrapped yarn at one end of the cardboard. Make sure the ends are even and securely tie it off as close to the wrapped yarn as possible. This will be the top of the tassel.

    • 4

Slide the wrapped yarn off the cardboard. Cut another length of yarn and wrap it around the top end of the tassel below where the first length of yarn was tied in Step 3. Knot the yarn tightly. Trim the ends or leave them according to your preference.

    • 5

Cut through all the strands of yarn at the bottom of the tassel. Trim the ends if needed to make sure they are even.

    • 6

Attach the tassel to the scarf using the ends of the piece of yarn used to tie off the top of the tassel in Step 3. Trim off or weave in any loose ends.

    Fringe

    • 7

Cut a number of lengths of yarn twice the length that you want the fringe to be.

    • 8

Fold the lengths of yarn in half and use a crochet hook to pull them partway through the end of the scarf so the you have a loop of yarn on one side and the ends of the yarn on the other. Do not pull the yarn all the way through the scarf.

    • 9

Keeping hold of the loop, used your crochet hook to draw the ends of the yarn through it, similar to a slip stitch. Pull the ends tight to create a secure knot and trim the strands to make them even.

    • 10

Repeat steps 1 to 3 across the edge of the scarf. Use larger or smaller intervals to vary the thickness of the fringe.
