How to Make a Burnisher

A burnisher is a tool that places a shine or gild on a metal object. It is also used to turn the bezel or jewelry prong toward the setting to hold it into place firmly. It is most commonly used during the jewelry making process but any flat metal surface is a candidate for burnishing. A burnisher has a head, ferrule and handle. Make a simple homemade burnisher from a heavy handled spoon in less than 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the safety glasses. Turn on the bench grinder.

    • 2

Hold the heavy handled spoon so the handle is on the same axis as the wheel on the bench grinder. Carefully grind the round end of the spoon off until 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the rounded/cupped end is straight. Turn off the bench grinder.

    • 3

Secure the handle of the heavy handled spoon in the bench vise until 1/2 inch of the handle remains above the top of the bench vise.

    • 4

Tap the round/cupped side of the spoon with the rawhide mallet. Continue to tap the spoon until the cupped spoon section is parallel with the top of the bench vise.

    • 5

Remove the bent spoon from the bench vise. Use the cupped side of the spoon to burnish.
