Use yarn to create a costume beard.

Yarn beards are an easy way to complete a costume that requires a beard. Using cheap materials, the yarn beard is simple to complete. Make the yarn beard with your child as a fun craft project or get your friends together and make matching beards for a costume party. Instructions

    • 1

Measure across the upper lip to the back of each ear. Measure from the back of each ear to the chin.

    • 2

Cut two lengths of ribbon according to the measurements in Step 1.

    • 3

Cut the yarn into strips approximately 12 inches long or twice the desired length of the beard.

    • 4

Fold the yarn in half. Place the folded edge over the ribbon so that the loop at the fold hangs down about a half inch on the back side of the ribbon. Pull the ends of the yarn through the loop and pull tight to secure the yarn to the ribbon. Repeat until the ribbon is covered in yarn, leaving an inch on each side of the ribbon. Repeat for the second ribbon.

    • 5

Knot the end of the first section together with the end of the second section. Repeat for the other side. Try on the beard to make sure it fits properly. The top ribbon will go over the ear and the bottom ribbon will go under the ear.

    • 6

Measure the head from the back of one ear to the back of the second ear. Cut a length of elastic for this measurement.

    • 7

Knot the elastic to the ends of the ribbon. This will keep the beard on when worn.

    • 8

Tie back the top section of the beard if desired by cutting two pieces of yarn a couple of inches long. Divide the yarn for the top section in half and pull to the sides of the bottom half of the beard. Knot the yarn around the section of yarn from the top half, securing around a few strands of yarn from the bottom half of the beard.
