How to Get a Plain Badge in "Crystal"
In "Pokemon Crystal," you must collect eight Gym Badges to enter the Pokemon League. The Plain Badge is the third Gym Badge you will add to your collection. Whitney, the Normal-type Gym Leader of Goldenrod City, possesses this badge. She will only hand it over if you can navigate her labyrinthine gym and defeat her Pokemon duo.

Travel to Goldenrod City by walking north through the Ilex Forest and Route 34.

Heal your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center on the west side of town if necessary.

Walk north through the city until you see the Goldenrod City Gym. It will be just south of the gate to Route 35. Enter the building.

Navigate through the simplistic maze, which is in the shape of a Clefairy. While the maze isn't challenging, you will face five other trainers as you navigate towards Whitney at the center of the gym. Victoria has a trio of Sentret -- the strongest being at level 17. Samantha has two Meowth at level 16. Carrie has a level 18 Snubull. Bridget has a trio of level 15 Jigglypuff. All of these Pokemon are weak to Fighting-type attacks but immune to Ghost-type moves.

Defeat Whitney in the center of the Goldenrod City Gym. Whitney's level 18 Clefairy can use the Encore, Mimic, Double Slap and Metronome abilities. Knock it out with a strong Fighting-type attack. Whitney's level 20 Miltank has higher physical defense than Clefairy. In addition, it can use the Milk Drink move to recover health. Miltank will attack using Stomp, a Normal-type move, and Roll Out, a Rock-type move that gains power with each use. Hit Miltank with your strongest attacks and use healing items as necessary.
