How to Cure a Mole-Infested Lawn Using Home Remedies

There are many home remedies for mole control, but none is as effective as trapping. Things like razor blades, glass shards and briers put over or into the moles' burrows do not deter them nor do castor oil concoctions, mothballs or baits meant for rodents. Moles feed on insects; and while grub control has been thought to control moles, a mole's diet consists largely of earthworms. Knowing how to trap these pests is your best bet when it comes to mole elimination. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Choose a trap. There are several different types to choose from. Harpoon, scissor-jaw and choker loop traps are considered the most humane of these traps.

    • 2

Select your site. This is important to the success of trapping moles or using any home remedies, such as glass or mothballs, since many tunnels are used infrequently or only once before being abandoned. Locate a tunnel and block it off by stepping on it to close it off. Check it within 24 to 48 hours to see if the moles have reopened it. A tunnel that is reopened this quickly is a prime site for setting a trap or filling with home remedies. Always look for straight tunnels, often that follow a man-made barrier, as these are the main and most heavily traveled tunnels.

Set the trap, following the directions carefully for use. Failure to follow the directions could result in an ineffective and even inhumane trap. Be aware that harpoon-style traps are the most difficult to set consistently. In lieu of a trap, place glass shards, other sharp material or mothballs into the tunnels at these points to repel the moles instead of trapping them.

Look for mole activity. Once you spot it, use a shovel to dig the mole out and eliminate it. Note that moles are able to burrow at a rate of 18 feet per hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • Set traps in the spring and fall when moles are close to the surface of the soil. Moles are active year-round but more likely to be close to the surface at these times. Set traps just after a heavy soaking rain, for best results, as this is when moles prefer to feed.
