How to Crochet a Button Boot

How to Crochet a Button Boot thumbnail
Crochet slippers or boots have a snugger fit if a buttoned cuff is used at the top.

Make a buttoned cuff on the top of a crocheted boot-type slipper to keep your ankles warmer. Besides providing additional warmth, the buttoned top offers a snugger fit and keeps the boot on your foot. Instead of employing the usual buttonhole, the button slips between two of the cuff's stitches. This simple step not only eliminates one small complication but also makes the cuff's size adjustable. Choose a couple of chic buttons for eye appeal.

Instructions

  1. Sole

    • 1

Make 11 chain stitches for the smallest size, using the crochet hook and yarn. Work a single crochet in the second chain stitch from the hook and in the remaining chains to the end.

Chain one stitch, turn, then work a single crochet in each stitch across the row. Repeat this row nine more times.

    • 2

Chain one stitch at the end of the tenth row. Turn, and work two single crochets in the next stitch. Make one single crochet in each stitch. Stop at the next-to-last one. Work two single crochets into the last stitch. You should have 12 single crochets.

    • 3

Turn, chain one stitch, and work a row of single crochet. Repeat the row of single crochet until the piece measures 3 inches from the beginning. Put the small safety pin in the last stitch as a marker. Don't break the yarn because you're going to be making the sides.

    Sides

    • 4

Work 21 single crochets in the stitches the side of the sole, spacing them evenly. Make 10 single crochets in the end of the sole for the heel. Work another evenly spaced 21 single crochets on the opposite side of the sole.

    • 5

Make 12 single crochets across the other end of the sole for the toe. Slip stitch into the beginning single crochet stitch.

    • 6

Single crochet in the front loop of each single crochet stitch from the previous round. Slip stitch into the first single crochet. Repeat this step twice. You have finished the sides , but don't break the yarn. You're going to begin the instep.

    • 7

Make a single crochet into the front loops of each of the next two stitches. Work a single crochet in each of the next 13 stitches. Don't work the rest of them.

    • 8

Turn and skip the first single crochet. Single crochet into the front loops of the next 14 stitches. Repeat these rows 15 times. At the end of the last row, don't turn the work or break the yarn. You're about to begin the cuff.

    • 9

At the end of the last row, cut the yarn and fasten it off. Weave in the yarn end, using the tapestry needle. You just finished the instep.

    Cuff

    • 10

Attach the yarn to the center of the top edge of the instep. Make one chain stitch, then single crochet in each stitch around the top of the foot opening. Slip stitch into the beginning stitch of the round.

    • 11

Make two chain stitches, turn, and work a half double crochet in each stitch around, until the last three stitches. Repeat twice.

    • 12

Go to the side of the cuff. Chain one stitch. Make two single crochets into the side of each half double crochet. At the corner, work three single crochets into that stitch. Single crochet in each of the single crochets until you reach the other corner. Work three three single crochets into this stitch and turn the corner. Make two single crochets in each half double crochet to the end of the row. Cut the yarn. Fasten it off and weave in the end.

    • 13

Sew one button to the right side of one cuff. Slip it through the space between two half double crochets on the opposite end instead of making a buttonhole. Repeat this with the other slipper. Reverse the button end of the cuff to the other side of the foot.
