How to Make a Drop Stitch
Knitters who need to make a quick gift have a friend in the drop stitch, a long decorative stitch that uses a single row of knitting to take up the space of several. While it looks like complicated lace, the drop stitch is just a variation on garter stitch. By wrapping the knitting needle three times instead of once before pulling it through a stitch, you create a long, lacy drop stitch.

1
Knit in garter stitch until you reach the row in which you want to make drop stitches.
-
2
Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle, just as you would when making a regular knit stitch.
-
-
3
Wrap the working yarn around the right needle three times. Pull all three wraps through the stitch and onto the right needle.
-
4
Wrap each stitch in the row three times, just as you did the first. As you work the row, the stitches on the right needle appear to be very packed together. At the end of the row, turn your work.
-
5
Insert the right needle into the first wrap of the first stitch on the left needle. Wrap the right needle once, making a regular garter stitch, and pull all three wraps off the left needle. Work the rest of the row in this fashion.
-
6
Tug on the bottom of your work to lengthen the drop stitches and straighten the knitting. Continue knitting in garter stitch until you are ready to make another row of drop stitches.
