How to Cut the Elastic on a Bra

A bra should give you a comfortable fit and support. Elastic strings within the bra are preferable for some over the traditional wire support system because it flexes and adapts to the shape of your body effectively. After a while, though, your elastic may become overstressed, which means you have to replace it with a new band. Don't start arbitrarily cutting to find the elastic string, though. Examine the bra carefully before you start working to determine the best way to reach the old elastic and cut it.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the bra on a flat surface with the inside facing upward. Run your fingers along the seams to locate the elastic bands in the areas that cause you discomfort.

    • 2

Rip out the thread on the seam with a seam ripper. Pull back the fabric to expose the length of elastic string. Clip the elastic with a pair of scissors and pull it out of the bra.

    • 3

Cut the excess string left by the torn stitches close to the fabric. Sew the seam back in place by hand, starting your stitch about an inch from each side of the damaged seam.
