How to Calculate the Percentage of Take Home Pay Spent on Rent
Understanding how much of your net pay should be allocated to rent will help you budget your money. When you determine the ratio of your take home pay compared with your rent, you can set aside a portion of your rent from each paycheck and have the appropriate amount at the end of the month.

1
Locate your take home pay amount on your pay stub, labeled "Net Pay." If you are paid weekly, multiply your net pay amount by 52 and divide the result by 12 to obtain a monthly take home pay total. If you are paid every two weeks, divide your net pay in half before multiplying it by 52. If you are paid monthly, simply multiply your monthly pay by 12. As an example, if your weekly take home pay is $401, your monthly take home pay is $1,737.67.
-
2
Divide your rent amount by your take home pay. For example, if you pay $600 per month, divide 600 by 1737.67, for a total of 0.3542.

3
Multiply the result by 100 to obtain a percentage. If your take home is $1,737.67 and you pay $600 per month, you are paying 34.5 percent of your take home pay for rent.
