How to Improve Word Unscramble Skills

Playing word unscramble is an excellent way to increase your mental dexterity and word knowledge. It can also provide a soothing escape from the day-to-day hassles of life. If you want to improve your skills, your best bet is practice. There are also a few tried and true techniques that will help you accomplish your word scramble goals and give you that extra edge. These same skills will also come in handy with competitive word games, such as Scrabble and Boggle, as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vowels in the second position and see if that helps with the word recognition. If there are an inordinate number of vowels, then it is more than likely the word starts with a vowel. Put the vowels in the first slot and work from there.

    • 2

Look for common prefixes and suffixes. Within a short time, you will easily spot -ing, -ed, pre-, dis- and other common prefixes and suffixes.

    • 3

Find any diphthongs that are common, such as th-, ph-, tr-, or others as the beginning of the word.

    • 4

Make it physical. Purchase a set of alphabet tiles or use the letter tiles from an old Scrabble game and arrange the letters as you work. Sometimes a tactile help will make it easier for you to unscramble what you see.

    • 5

Practice, practice, practice. With time, you will find it easier to decipher words and their meaning and will be able to readily identify the common words used by puzzle writers.
