How to Get off of a Ski Lift in Your Skis

How to Get off of a Ski Lift in Your Skis thumbnail
Planning ahead for getting off a ski lift is a good idea.

The first time you get on a ski lift in full ski gear can be nerve-wracking; it is superseded only by the having to get off a ski lift for the first time. Although it can be very intimidating, exiting a ski lift is designed to be a smooth process. To properly get off a ski lift, you must be prepared to exit, stand up properly and allow your momentum to successfully navigate you away from the dismount point.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the safety bar as you near the end of the lift. Remove your feet from the footrest and allow them to dangle below the chair.

    • 2

Place both poles in one hand and look forward. Determine where you plan to go after you exit the ski lift area.

    • 3

Raise the ends of your ski tips slightly to make your egress from the lift as smooth as possible.

    • 4

Plant your skis firmly and stand up at the point where the signage by the lift states to exit the chair. Place your ski poles firmly in each hand. Slightly bend you knees to absorb the initial bump from exiting the chair.

    • 5

Quickly clear yourself away from the chair lift to avoid getting hit by your chair or getting in the way of the next skier. Allow the momentum created by the ski lift chair to carry you forward to your chosen destination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that there is nothing loose or dangling from your outfit that can snag the chair as you leave.

  • Ensure that all of your equipment is in place and ready for your exit, including gloves, goggles and ski poles.
