How to Build a Lego Grand Staircase
Building a grand staircase from Legos is one of the simplest do-it-yourself Lego projects. But it is also one that allows for almost limitless creativity, as there are many different design options you can choose. Be creative, and building a Lego grand staircase can be a rewarding project.

1
Choose a layout for your grand staircase. You can make a grand staircase in many designs. For example, you can build a single staircase, or a staircase split in two. Your staircase can stay the same width the entire way down, can widen gradually as it descends, or can maintain an even width, then expand or split at the very bottom.

2
Choose a look for your grand staircase. Choose the color of your staircase and the surface texture you would like it to have. Decide how many stairs you would like in your staircase. The number of stairs will depend on the scope of your project (if the staircase is part of a larger structure, choose the number of stairs accordingly). Finally, choose the style of banister you would like, if any. You can use regular Lego bricks, or specialty detail pieces for posts.

3
Construct the stairs themselves. Depending upon the number of bricks you have available, you can leave your stairs hollow underneath or fill in the space under the stairs with bricks. For hollow stairs, lay two-circle-wide standard bricks lengthwise for each stair, then construct the following stair by snapping bricks into place over the back line of circles on the stair below. For supported stairs, place bricks underneath each stair to form a solid block of bricks with a stair-step top. If you choose supported stairs, you can make each stair one circle deep (as with hollow stairs), or make each stair two circles deep (or more).

Add banisters, if desired. If you are using standard bricks, use single-circle bricks or one-by-two bricks to construct the banisters along each stair. If you are using detail pieces for posts, snap them into the stairs at the edge, then top them with bricks or poles, as appropriate.

5
Add surfacing to the stair tops, if desired. You can leave your grand staircase uncovered, if you like. Choosing this option will make it easier to attach mini-figures to the stairs (you will be able to snap them into place), if you plan to pose figures on the grand staircase. But, if you would like a more polished look, you can snap flat, surface-detail pieces over the top of each stair. Options include smooth tops in solid colors and grill-like textures that can be used to simulate carpet.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not have all the pieces you need to construct your grand staircase, there are several options available. Many Lego stores allow the purchase of individual bricks, as does the Lego website.
If you would like to build a grand staircase from a particular film or video game, let this guide your choices. For example, if you wish to build the grand staircase from the Titanic, use yellow bricks and widen your staircase at the bottom. If you wish to build the grand staircase of Hogwarts from Lego Harry Potter, use gray stairs with smooth-topped detail pieces, and a post-style banister.
The Legos you will use to build your grand staircase are toys to you, but are choking hazards to small children and infants. Be sure to keep your Legos away from any infants or toddlers in the house.
