How to Do Letters With Umlauts on a Mac

If you live and work in an English-speaking environment, chances are you use an American or UK English keyboard. While this facilitates your everyday typing life, you may hit a snag when you need to type foreign words with accents. Umlauts, which are the two small dots located above vowels in many Nordic languages like Swedish and Finnish, are not very common in the English language. However if for some reason you need to use them, your Mac has a keyboard shortcut that lets you place umlauts above letters.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the first letters of the word, stopping before the letter that needs an umlaut.

    • 2

Hold the "Option" key and press the "U" key to add an umlaut.

    • 3

Type the letter to add it below the umlaut.
