How to Update SAS Setinit in Linux

SAS setinit is a software package that helps with collecting and analyzing data, creating reports and project management. There are versions for both Windows and Linux and both allow working off-site. As new versions of SAS come out, you may need to update to take advantage of the functionality, but unlike most Linux software, you cannot do this automatically through the update manager on your computer. Because it is a paid software, you also may need to update licenses or setinit files from time to time.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the checklists on the SAS updates site to decide which updates to use. These updates depend on the type of software package you are running, what you want to add to your current installation and how old the current version of the software is.

    • 2

Request an upgrade using the form on the SAS site. If you have not already, you may need to complete a profile on the SAS site to be able to use the upgrade request form.

    • 3

Follow the instructions emailed to you to download the installation file. The email also contains a text file with your setinit file. You have the option to get installation DVDs mailed to you instead.

    • 4

Open a terminal window. In Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distribution, press and hold "Ctrl," "Alt" and "T." Enter "cd !SASROOT/utilities/bin" in the terminal. Enter your root password when it prompts you.

    • 5

Enter "sudo ./setup.sh" in the terminal to run the SAS setup program. Click "Run Setup Utilities" in the main setup menu to install the newest version of the SAS software. Click "Renew SAS Software" and browse to the text file you downloaded from the installation email and apply it. You do not need to configure anything further to update the setinit file.

    • 6

Click "Perform SAS Software Configuration" and configure your SAS installation for your needs. Then click "Configure User Authentication" and set up your username and password. Press the "Q" key to exit the configuration menu.

    • 7

Click the application menu and enter "SAS" in the search bar. Click on the software that comes up to run it. Click the "Libraries" option. Click the "File" menu and select "Open."

    • 8

Browse to the older SAS file and open it. You now have the most current version of SAS and an updated license file.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you update your license without upgrading your SAS installation, after you purchase your new license and receive the email with the text file, you can do Step 5 without completing any of the other steps.
