Parents can help their children be proud of their race or ethnicity.

Self-esteem is "the foundation of a child's well-being and the key to success as an adult," according to Dr. Sears. Self-confident children are usually happy, energetic, creative and friendly. Children with low self-esteem often doubt their abilities and wish to be someone else. Parents can use several strategies to improve their child's self-esteem in a racially conscious society.

Instructions

    • 1

Display self-confidence in front of your child. Say only positive things about yourself in front of him. For example, instead of saying you look fat in a new dress, say how good you look.

    • 2

Tell your child that the world is full of people with different races, religions and ethnicities. Explain that no matter how different a person is from you, she still deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. Let her know that she is special just the way she is; enforce the idea that she should not feel the need to change for anyone.

    • 3

Protect your child from negative influences at school. Regularly ask your child about his day. Show him that you care about his well-being, so he feels more comfortable talking to you about problems. If you find out that other children tease him, talk to his school principal about the matter immediately.

    • 4

Give your child frequent praise to boost her self-confidence. For example, say, "After reading your essay, I can see why you received such a good grade. You are a very talented writer." Only give sincere compliments.

    • 5

Spend quality time with your child. Choose an activity he enjoys, such as going to the beach, bike riding or playing a board game. Show him that you are interested in him by asking him how school is going or what he did with his friend last night.
