How to Make a Furry Cookie Monster Fondant

If you are making a fondant Cookie Monster sculpture or are covering a Cookie Monster shaped cake with fondant, you will need a technique to transform the smooth finish of the sugar gum paste into wispy strands of fur. Scraping the surface with a sharp object will only give the impression of fur, but using a simple technique that involves cuticle scissors will allow you to actually add three-dimensional fur that stands up and away from the fondant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use blue rolled fondant to either create your Cookie Monster shape or roll an even layer over your cake. If you are covering a cake with the blue fondant, roll the sheet out to be 1/4 inch thick instead of 1/8 inch thick. This will help prevent the scissors from poking all the way through the fondant to the cake while you are working.

    • 2

Snip a small incision into the blue fondant with a pair of clean, uncurved cuticle scissors. The blades should penetrate about 1/8 inch into the blue fondant. When you make the cut, lift the scissors directly away from the fondant to create a small wisp.

    • 3

Repeat the technique all over the entire surface area of the Cookie Monster, taking your time to ensure the fur wisps are similar in size for a quality finished piece.

    • 4

Use two rolled balls or circles of white rolled fondant with a smaller dot of rolled black fondant for the eyes.
