How to Crochet Edging on Onesies
Delicate crocheted stitches along the collar and cuffs of a onesie will turn ordinary baby clothes into a one-of-a-kind outfit for an infant. Intermediate crocheters can quickly complete this project with a few basic stitches and some careful preparations.
Things You'll Need
- Embroidery floss
- Sewing needle
- Size 5 cotton crochet thread
- Size 2 steel crochet hook
- Measuring tape
- Fabric marker or chalk
Instructions
-
Preparing the Onesie
-
1
Measure along the onesie's cuffs and collar and make marks one-eighth inch apart.
-
2
Measure down one-eighth inch from each mark and make a second set of marks. These marks represent the bottom of the blanket stitch posts you will be making and will be the set of marks you'll use in the next steps.
-
-
3
Starting with the collar and using two plies of embroidery floss, sew from the wrong side of the onesie to the right side up through one of the bottom marks to set your knot.
-
4
Stitch down through the next mark without tightening your thread all the way down. This will form a loop.
-
5
Guide your needle through the loop working from the back to the front and pull your stitch to form a loose loop.
-
6
Insert your needle in the next marker, working your needle through the loop you've just formed from the back to the front. Tighten down this stitch and all subsequent stitches so that the post of the stitch is straight. This is the blanket stitch.
-
7
Continue working around the collar in blanket stitch until you reach the first stitch.
-
8
Guide your needle through the post of the first stitch, then insert the needle into the onesie's hem to run the thread vertically through the hem.
-
9
Pull the stitch snug and make a knot under the back bar of the last stitch. Cut your thread.
-
10
Work each cuff in blanket stitch as directed for the collar until you reach the last stitch. Since there isn't a hem to work through, slide your needle through the fabric of the sleeve, making sure that your needle never breaches the front of the fabric. Fasten off your thread.
Crocheted Onesie Edge
-
11
Attach the crochet thread with a slip stitch in any of the embroidery thread loops along the collar of the onesie. Chain one.
-
12
Work three single crochet stitches between the posts of your starting loop.
-
13
Make a double crochet stitch using the right post of the next loop as the foundation for your stitch.
-
14
Crochet three chain stitches, then slip stitch in the top of the double crochet. This makes a picot stitch.
-
15
Work three single crochets, one post stitch double crochet and picot around the collar of the onesie, ending with one post double crochet and picot. Make a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round to close off your work. Repeat stitches for both cuffs.

Tips & Warnings
You may omit the picot stitch for a more masculine edge.
Embroidery floss has six plies, so you will need to unwrap the floss for this project.
You can use beeswax on the embroidery floss to make the threads stronger. Beeswax can be found in the quilting notions section of your local craft store.
