How to Make an Herb Crown
While herbs have been used throughout history for food, flavoring and medicine, the leaves and flowers of many varieties were also used for decoration. Weddings and other celebrations were occasions to weave aromatic herbs with decorative flowers into a headpiece, especially since many herbs were considered to have special significance or to bring good luck or blessings. Still considered attractive accessories today, especially for flower girls in weddings, herbal crowns can be made even by novices with a few simple floral tools.
Things You'll Need
- 18-gauge floral wire
- Green floral tape
- Scissors
- Needle-nosed pliers
- Ribbons in desired colors, 8 inches longer or more
- Herbs such as bay leaves, lavender, rosemary, thyme, or sage
- Flowers

1
Cut an 18-inch section of floral wire for the base of the crown. Cut a piece of floral tape approximately 15 inches long. Beginning at one end, wrap the tape around the wire in an over and under motion. Pull on the tape as you wrap; the tape is made to stretch and should be somewhat tight against the wire. Wrap the entire wire in floral tape and cut off any extra tape on either end when you're finished wrapping.

2
Use the needle-nosed pliers to bend both ends of the floral-covered wire into a small loop. Tie one or more ribbons to each loop; these can be used as streamers and also to tie the crown onto the head when it's completed.

3
Cut the chosen herbs and flowers into lengths of 3 to 4 inches. Make a small bundle of several sprigs of herbs, with one flower on top, then wrap the stems with floral tape to make a miniature bouquet. Make several of these small bundles.

4
Place an herbal bundle at one end of the tape-wrapped wire with the stems parallel to the wire. Secure the stems to the wire with floral tape. Cut the tape. Repeat this down the length of the wire, making sure to cover all of the wire except the loops on each end. If necessary, make more herbal bundles.

5
Bend the herb-decorated wire into a circle, which can be tied around the head with one or more of the streamers; these will also allow the width of the crown to be adjusted.

Tips & Warnings
Bobby pins or tiny clips can be used to secure the crown to the head.
Make sure that no sharp wires are sticking out at either end of the crown; if necessary, cover the looped ends in floral tape before attaching the streamers.
