How to Force-quit a Mac Spinning Ball

Any Mac user knows and fears the dreaded rainbow spinning ball, which usually signifies your current application has stalled, leaving you powerless in front of your Mac. While Macs don't necessarily have a reputation for stalling frequently, it can happen to even the most experienced of self-proclaimed Mac geniuses. If you do happen to meet the rainbow spinning ball, you can force-quit the application that is causing the problem -- which helps you avoid having to restart your Mac.

      Click the icon in your dock for the application that is stalling.

      Simultaneously press and hold the "Command," "Option" and "Esc" keys to bring up the "Force Quit" window. You should see "Not Responding" next to the stalling application.

      Click the application and then click "Force Quit." Click "Force Quit" again to confirm you want to force-quit the application.
