Use your cover letter to highlight your experience.

Your resume may be the key to getting a job in the computer industry, but your cover letter can be just as important. The cover sheet is the first thing the hiring manager sees, even before that manager reviews your resume. Using that cover sheet to make a compelling case for why you are the perfect candidate can put you head and shoulders above the other candidates for the IT position you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the job listing carefully and circle any specific requirements listed. For instance, a job posting for a computer technician might require experience with the Windows XP and Windows 7 operating system, while a listing for a programmer might specify COBOL or C++ knowledge.

    • 2

Check the job listing for contact information, including the name of the hiring manager and the mailing address of the company. Type your return address at the top of the letter, then address it to the company and the manager listed in the job posting. Addressing it to the exact hiring manager, by name, shows an attention to detail.

    • 3

Begin the letter by stating the exact job for which you are applying. Express your desire to be considered for the position, followed by a list of your relevant experience. Cite any experience specifically requested in the job posting first. For instance, if the job listing asks for experience with HTML, list that experience first, followed by any other experience you feel is important.

    • 4

Close the letter by thanking the hiring manager for her time. Provide full contact information, including your cell phone number, home phone number and email address. Attach a copy of your resume to the letter and submit it to the physical or email address listed in the job posting.

Tips & Warnings

  • A good cover letter is important as it allows you to highlight information not requested in an application or on a resume, and shows the hiring manager your communication style.

  • When searching for a job, know that employers look at your Facebook page when deciding to call you in for an interview. Don't let your Facebook page ruin your chances before you even get the interview, clean it up prior to sending out resumes.
