Make a mesh bag bird feeders with a few common household materials. You ca obtain mesh netting at bird feed stores, craft stores or by recycling an onion or orange bag. However, use mesh squares that are small enough to hold the suet or bird seed without spilling. By making your own mesh bird feeders, you can make as many as you like and hang them around your home.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-inch by 10-inch square piece of mesh netting or a mesh onion bag cut to size
  • Small plate or saucer
  • Black magic marker
  • Scissors
  • 1 - 9 oz. package of bird suet or bird seed cake

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a small plate or saucer upside down on top of the mesh netting. Draw around the plate with a black magic marker.

      Cut the circle shape out of the mesh netting using scissors.

      Insert the suet or bird seed cake into the center of the mesh netting circle.

      Pull the mesh netting tightly around the suet and gather the top edges of the mesh circle together. Tie the top of the mesh bag with string.

      Tie another longer string at the top of the bag to use for hanging.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fill a mesh bag with some fur from your pets or any safe soft material and place these near your bird houses. Birds will flock to the mesh bag to use the material to build their nests.

  • Install your mesh bag bird feeders away from high traffic areas, to encourage birds to use them.
