Hide or Minimize Toolbox on GIMP

When you launch the Gnu Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, at least two windows will open. The first is the main image window, where the picture you are currently working on is displayed, and the second is the toolbox, where your tools for manipulating the image reside. Although the toolbox has an "X" in the top-right corner, if you click it the program itself will close rather than the toolbox. To close the toolbox, you must use a built-in command that will hide it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Gnu Image Manipulation Program and wait for the main image window to appear.

    • 2

Click anywhere in the main image window to select it. You cannot hide your toolbox while you have it selected.

    • 3

Press "Tab" to hide the toolbox. Pressing "Tab" again will bring it back.

Tips & Warnings

  • The "Tab" key will hide both the toolbox and any docks or dialogs that you have open. To unhide docks or dialogs without bringing the toolbox back, click the "Windows" menu from the main image window and choose the dialog or dock from the list found there.
